This is my 3 star advance review of this 86 minute movie called “American Comic” that will have it’s World Premiere at The 28th Dances With Films festival 2025-(DWF) at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, on the closing night: Sunday, June 29 @ 6:45 PM.
The Actor that starred on the hit TV Comedy Series “King of Queens” >Patton Oswalt says: “Oh Jesus… I’m experiencing PTSD. Wow.” I say that this is a great story of 2 up-and-coming stand-up comedians just barely getting by, by traveling on the road, and trying to make it to the big time.
At one point in the movie the lead comic does make it to the big time, by making it on to a big-time Podcast, that does help his career, but then things turn around- but we will not give away the rest of the movie- so you will have to go out and watch it for yourselves. By the way, that “big-time” Podcaster was played by Jon Gabrus in this movie. It is a verité-style mockumentary that gets inside the underbelly of the unique subculture of stand-up comedy. The star of the movie is Stand-up Comedian: Joe Kwaczala, who is the Producer, Writer, and Lead Actor of this movie, who did a great acting and comedic job, as this movie was filmed in real comedy clubs with live audiences that didn’t realize that he was in character. The reactions from every show are genuine. The film was Directed and Produced by Daniel J. Clark (Behind the Curve), and also stars: Hayley McFarland, Sam Wiles, John Eisenrich, Biniam Bizuneh, Doug Benson, Jon Gabrus, and Patton Oswalt!
This film also looks at the 2 comics, who despite their superficial “cultural” differences, share remarkable similarities when it comes to egotism, self-destruction, and social ineptitude. During the movie the self-absorbed competitiveness intensifies, leading to some shocking and unexpected revelations.
So stay tuned for more from the next 11 days of the Dances With Films festival, and thanks for watching Entertainment & Sports Today TV and Entertainment Today on Time Warner/ Spectrum.
