Lamar introduced Sheba (and other budding poets including but not limited to the incredible talent of the poet – Thirteen of Nazareth, who later moved to Northern VA and appeared on Queen Sheba’s albums: The Truth, SHEBATAR and CIVIL WRITES to the world of Poetry Slam®, Inc. and life on the road as a touring poet. On July 10, 2001 Lamar Hill introduced Queen Sheba to her soon-to-be mentor and music producer, Taalam Acey. Life was soon about to be off the rails.

Malik Yusef el-Shabazz Jones is also a rapper, record producer, and director. Jones’ surname means “King Joseph” (Malik and Yusuf, respectively) in Arabic. He was raised in Chicago’s South Side neighborhood, known as the “Wild 100’s”, where he became affiliated with the Blackstone Rangers street gang; but he is no longer involved in gang activity. In his youth, he became friendly with the rapper Common. He is dyslexic, which he first realized as a teenager. He first became known regionally as a street poet, and later into an actor, mainly acting out of his “street hustler” persona. As a spoken word artist, Jones uses poetry to explore a wide range of personal and social issues while maintaining a global perspective aimed at fostering benevolence.
His work blends street vernacular with diverse musical backdrops, including hip-hop beats, organic keyboards, guitars, and horns. Jones is renowned for his role as a “wordsmith”, delivering verses that reflect his experiences growing up in Chicago’s urban landscape. His poetry offers insights into the complexities of inner-city life and broader socio-economic challenges.
Yusef draws inspiration from various sources, including his children, dreams, ancestral heritage, and influential poets such as Langston Hughes, William Shakespeare, Haki Madhubuti, and Phillis Wheatley.
