“Moonlight” wins The Spirit Award, after winning The Golden Globe Award , and then goes on to win The Oscar,over La La Land for Best Picture , after a big mistake by the 2 presenters, who read the card that was inside the famous envelope of the winners,- wrong ! La La Land was called out for the Best Picture going during the ceremony just moments before Academy bosses realized the mistake, and the cast of Moonlight were called to the stage instead.
Moonlight charts the life of Chiron across three defining chapters of his life – starting out as a young black man growing up in turbulent Miami, it follows his ongoing struggles with his sexuality and unstable family life. As we follow his life through his teenage years and into manhood – the film becomes a much broader inspection into identity as a whole. Showing how his damaged upbringing with drug-addict mother Paula, and high school tussles shape his road ahead.
Moonlight is a three chapter story of a young man named Chiron , and the main character Chiron is played by three different actors over the course of the film, with Alex R. Hibbert playing his younger self, Ashton Sanders his teenage years, and Trevante Rhodes in his adult prime. Playing Chiron’s close friend Kevin is another batch of three actors, including Jharrel Jerome, Jaden Piner and Andre Holland.

The film also boasts an excellent supporting cast, including Mahershala Ali, who won Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars for his role as drug dealer Juan. Janelle Monae, who is a successful singer-songwriter, who a few years ago performed in The ESPY After-Party ; plays opposite Ali as Teresa. Casey Affleck won The Best Actor Spirit Award , and then the very next day won The Oscar , again for Best Actor, for his superb leading role in Manchester by the Sea. This movie was a very touching, and moving story that starts after the death of his older brother Joe, Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked that Joe has made him sole guardian of his teenage nephew Patrick. Taking leave of his job as a janitor in Boston, Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea, the fishing village where his working-class family has lived for generations. There, he is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife, Randi (Michelle Williams), and the community where he was born and raised.
